Abstract

<PICT:1033924/C4-C5/1> A method of making a gas mixture containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprises injecting a hydrocarbon, e.g. one liquid at N.T.P., into a stream of hot combustion gas (produced at 6) immediately before introducing that stream as a high velocity jet 3 via an inset 5 into a reaction space 4, an oxygen-containing gas being supplied to the jet 3, at 7, and the resultant gas mixture being drawn off through at least one outlet 8. The combustion gas is made in a water-cooled chamber 6 by burning a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. propane, with air, the first mentioned hydrocarbon and, if desired, water or steam, being added to the gas stream near the exit from the chamber 6. The oxygen-containing gas may be preheated. e.g. by heat exchange with the gas mixture produced, and is directed tangentially to the jet 3, which enters the space 4 at sonic velocity. The process is preferably carried out at super-atmospheric pressure. Two or more jets 3 arranged tangentially of the reaction chamber and each supplied with an oxygen-containing gas, may be employed.
