Abstract
1400266 Carbon black using plasma heating GOSUDARSTVENNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY ENERGETTICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI G M KRZHIZHANOVSKOGO 19 Oct 1972 48133/72 Heading C1A Carbon black is produced by forming, using electric discharge, a plasma of a first stream of hydrocarbon and introducing into the so pyrolysed first stream, (downstream of the plasma) a second stream of hydrocarbon at a temperature below that of the first stream so as to form a composite stream containing carbon black. Preferably the first hydrocarbon stream is gaseous and is introduced via inlet 5 into the upper half of the apparatus shown. An arc ignited by starter 20 is struck between the upper and lower water-cooled cylindrical electrodes 6 and 11. The plasma formed may attain a temp. of 2000-5000‹ K and a further stream of hydrocarbon is introduced in it in space 22 by inlet 15 to improve the use made of the available heat, then the composite stream is obtained by quenching, for example, to a temperature of 1100‹ to 1150‹ C. by introducing a second stream of hydrocarbon via inlet 21, and this composite stream is then cooled further, e.g. to 500‹ K., by water sprays through radial nozzles 17 and axial nozzles 18. The carbon black is separated from the stream issuing from the furnace.
