Abstract
Pulverulent solid materials which are to be subjected to heat treatment and/or reacted with hot gaseous or vaporous media are injected tangentially through an inlet 15 together with at least part of the hot gaseous or vaporous media into an externally heated reaction chamber 1 of circular cross-section 7 in such a way that the <PICT:0714925/III/1> <PICT:0714925/III/2> solid material and the hot gaseous or vaporous media follow a helical path around the heated interior walls of the chamber before being discharged into a separating chamber 3, the solid and gaeeous or vaporous components of the mixture being caused to travel at different velocities. The treated or reacted solid material is removed through an opening 21 and the gaseous or vaporous media leave by a pipe 25 after passing through a cyclone separator 23. As shown in Fig. 1, the chamber 1 has a double frusto-conical form and a second stream of the gaseous or vaporous media may be introduced through line 20. The chamber 1 is heated by annular flues 6 into which a combustible gas and air are introduced through nozzles 8 and pipes 9 respectively. In a modification (Fig. 6) a conical tubular member 60 is used and the solid material is injected through a line 66 and the gaseous or vaporous media through a plurality of openings 65. The treatment and/or reation may comprise the low temperature carbonisation or partial oxidation of coal, the calcining of limestone to produce lime or the reduction of iron ores to iron. In the low temperature carbonisation of coal and the calcining of limestone the hot gaseous or vaporous media consists of hot combustion products of a fluid fuel and air.
