Abstract

<PICT:0653357/III/1> Decrepitatable dust-forming solids, particularly lime-bearing materials, are heat-treated by a multi-bed fluidized process, in which the gases rising from a bed are treated for the reduction of their dust content before being passed to the next bed. As shown, the finely-divided material is fed by screw 14 to a preheating bed 62, overflowing through pipe 53 to calcining bed 20, and thence through pipe 21 to cooling bed 35 from which it is discharged through pipe 46. Air is supplied to windbox 34 to fluidize bed 35, and passes through partition 25 into bed 20 wherein it combines with fuel supplied through conduit 22. The dust-laden gases pass through pipe 40 to cyclone 42, the separated dust being sent either into the cooling zone or combined with the cooled product. The dust-diminished gases pass to zone 66 and thence through partition 50 into the preheating zone. In starting up the apparatus, additional fluid or fluidized fuel is supplied through conduit 28. Hydrocarbon oils, coal gas, natural gas and powdered coal are specified as fuels.
