Abstract
In the furnace process for the manufacture of carbon black a carbon-black-producing hydrocarbon feedstock is introduced into a turbulent burning mixture of fuel gas and air at one end of an elongated reaction zone to produce a reaction zone effluent of carbon black suspended in by-product combination and dissociation gases from which the carbon black is subsequently removed, and wherein, before said feedstock is so introduced, it is subjected to a vapour stripping operation by passing a gas through the feedstock, said gas and the vapour derived from the feedstock being used as said fuel gas. Oil black feedstock is introduced into the flash tank 10 through conduit 12 after having been preheated to permit easy stripping of volatile material. The feedstock is introduced to raise the level of liquid in the flash tank to the level of flow 22. A metered flow of lean combustible gas is then introduced to flask tank 10 through 14 and 16. The gas may be preheated to from 500 DEG F. to 2000 DEG F. Fuel gas from the flash tank 10 then passes through the discharge pipe 26 into a preheat coil 62 of the carbon black reactor 30. Heavy ends of the raw liquid feedstock from flash 10 is drawn through 32. Atomized vapour strip feedstock is injected from the spray head 72, air is introduced to the annulus 76 so as to provide a concentric flow of air around the spray head 72 and directing the atomized feedstock axially down the centre of the inner metallic reactor tube 50. Air which has been introduced into the annulus between 50 and 44 downstream in the reactor is mixed with the inert fuel gas in the chamber 46. The mixture is ignited as it flows into the inner reaction tube 50 so as to form an annular sheet of flame and hot combustion products surrounding the atomized axially injected feedstock. Effluent gases take the form of an oil black aerosol. The product is isolated in the usual way. The vapour stripping medium may be natural gas or synthesis gas. By-product combustion and dissociation gases may be recycled as the vapour stripping medium.
