Abstract

An improvement in the process for producing carbon black of the type described in Specification 621,031 comprises the provision of a combustion chamber and intermediate chamber wherein the reactant hydrocarbon, before entering the reaction chamber, is preheated by burning a combustible mixture in direct heat-exchange <PICT:0627872/III/1> therewith. Hydrocarbon is continuously sprayed, or in the case of liquid such as gas oil pumped at say 100-150 pounds per square inch, through inlet 53, with or without added air, into cylindrical preheating combustion chamber 52 having refractory lining of e.g. sillimanite or alpha-alumina 51 and one or more burners, as shown tangential burners, 55, for fuel gas and air to effect direct heat-exchange at above, say, 3000 DEG F. The flame and combustion products spiral towards the centre of the combustion chamber 52 and are carried with the preheated hydrocarbon feed into cylindrical intermediate chamber 34 of smaller diameter having refractory lining 35, wherein a layer of combustion products flows helically next to the chamber wall insulating the axially flowing hydrocarbon therefrom, while continuing preheating and vaporizing and/or pre-cracking of the feed. The resultant gaseous mixture passes to the reaction chamber 10 which is of the type described in Specification 621,031 without a separate preheater. The whole apparatus is enclosed in a steel sheel 13 with insulation 12. The effluent from reaction chamber 10 is cooled to 1200 DEG F. in an air-cooling pipe and then to 300-400 DEG F. by water spray before separating the carbon black in bag filters.
