Abstract
190,545. Umpleby, F., and Powers, H. Sept. 24, 1921. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-Apparatus for generating gas from solid or liquid carbonac.eous materials comprises a chamber through which the materials are passed surrounded and heated by a porous refractory tube the inner surface of which is rendered incandescent by surface combustion. Solid material such as coal is powdered and fed into a chamber 11 which is surrounded by a porous tube 15 supplied on its outer side with a combustible gaseous mixture through an opening 16 and annular passage 18, the inner surface of the tube being rendered incandescent by surface combustion and the products of combustion passing off through an outlet 20. The porous tube 15 is cooled by contact with metal plugs 21 held in flanges 22 on the inside of the outer casing 17, and the generator may be water cooled. The Provisional Specification states also that the interior of the porous tube may be electrically heated.
