Abstract

196,972. Umpleby, F., and Powers, H. Jan. 4, 1922. Gaseous-fuel furnaces. - Carbonaceous materials such as coal, coke, tar, vegetable matter, peat or oils or a colloidal mixture of oil and finely divided solid are gasified by passage through a receptacle heated by surface combustion taking place on its outer surface or outer and inner surfaces and in refractory materials contained in a chamber by which the receptacle is surrounded. The powdered solid material is supplied through rotary feeding means 12 of the kind dedescribed in Specification 190,545 into a receptacle 1 heated by surface combustion from a combustible gas introduced through an opening 8 passage 9 and inlets 7a, the air being supplied by an opening 5 and passage 6 and the products of combustion taking place in the refractory material 2 and on the wall of the receptacle 1 escape by an outlet 10. A layer of heat-resisting material 20 separates the combustion space 3 from an air or water jacket 25. The gases generated escape through an outlet 22, but part of them may be admitted through apertures at the bottom of the receptacle 1 to the space 3. The material rests on a grate 15 which is shaken by a plunger and rotating cam device 17 to discharge the residue into a tank 18. One of the Provisional Specifications states also that the receptacle may be given a reciprocating or rotary motion.
