Abstract

Processes and methods of combustion; fuel, feeding; ash-pits; generating combustion products urder pressure.-Fuel such as coal, coke, lignite, peat &c. is ground or pulverized and converted into a pasty or plastic mass by mixing it with oil or water to render it suitable for being forced by fluid pressure or by mechanical means into a combustion chamber and burnt in contact with a stream of air. As shown in the Figure, the fuel in a semi-fluid condition is supplied to a reservoir a, which may be provided with stirrers, and is fed bv fluid pressure admitted by a pipe g through a pipe c to a combustion chamber d. The fuel enters the combustion chamber through a refractory nozzle m and meets a blast of air supplied by a pipe i. Combustion of the fuel is initiated by gas supplied through a pipe and ignited by a sparking-plug k. The nozzle m may be provided with grooves n which facilitate the disengagement of the volatile products from the fuel. The high temperature produced in the combustion chamber effects the fusion of ashes which collect in a water-cooled annular vessel o surrounding the nozzle m. The fused ashes pass through a spout q and and fall into a vessel s containing water and provided with a discharge valve t. The steam generated in the vessel s passes into the combustion chamber d. Combustion may be effected in the chamber d under high pressure as may be the case with an internal combustion turbine or the combustion chamber may be adapted for heating a steam boiler.
