Abstract

<PICT:0922892/III/1> In a process of gasifying a solid or liquid fuel with air the hot products are passed through a descending column of lumpy inert refractory material whereby carbon and other products suspended in the gas are removed therefrom and are subsequently gasified with a mixture of air and steam to produce additional gas which is withdrawn together with the gas produced directly from the solid or liquid fuel. The lumpy material may be corundon or aluminium either alone or mixed with zirconium oxide and refractory calcined chamotte. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 the lumpy material descends a tower 5 and is withdrawn at the base of the tower and passed back to the top of the tower via a conveyer 13. Producer gas from a producer 1 enters the descending column of lumpy material through an annular chamber 6 formed around the column of lumpy material by a widening of the tower. Air and steam are introduced at 14 and the combined gas is withdrawn at 15. In a modification a liquid fuel is gasified in the annular chamber 6 either by air admitted directly into the annular chamber or by additional air added through the pipe 15. In the latter case a conical deflector is positioned in the widened part of the tower so that the air and gas rising in the lower part of the tower is made to pass through the annular chamber.
