Abstract
A process for the production of ore coke comprises superficially igniting a damp mixture of finely divided ore, particularly zinc ore, and coking coal on a support permeable to gases such as a Dwight Lloyd sintering apparatus or a sintering pan and subjecting the charge to an up or down blast. The charge may be ignited by a stationary or travelling furnace or by means of hot gases. Air low in oxygen is used, for example hot waste gases from the process itself. If air is used a layer of material to lower the oxygen content of the blast, for example coal, is disposed above or below the charge. A movable sprinkler may distribute water over the charge to prevent incipient combustion of the coke.
