Abstract

Extracting.-The charge supplied to an oven for the reduction of iron ore is conveyed through and over a series of superposed tables, plates or stories in counter - current to hot reducing gases and at a temperature which will not cause melting or fritting while the ore is changed into ironsponge. Iron ore, mixed with coal if required, supplied to the funnel e constantly drops through the mouth on to the circular stationary plates d and the annular plates b of the rotating mantle a. Teeth g on the underside of the plates rake the material so that it falls downwards slowly from layer to layer thus eliminating the usual very high furnace. Reducing gases supplied through ports i travel upwards at a temperature say below 1000‹ C. In the lower chamber l the hot ironsponge is carburetted, cooled or melted down with the aid of pressure air. The reduced ore is prevented from re-oxidation if desired by either carburetting in a reducing atmosphere by solid carbon or liquid hydrocarbons or else by melting in a reducing atmosphere.
