Abstract

875,794. Producing aluminium by electrolysis. ELEKTROKEMISK A.S. Dec. 15, 1958 [Dec. 19, 1957], No. 40426/58. Class 41. A furnace for producing aluminium by electrolysis from a solution of alumina in molten cryolite in the furnace bath 9 has a hopper 1 for a charge 2 of alumina, means for collecting gases from the furnace and passing them through a burner, and means for passing the hot combustion gases from the burner through the charge 2 in the hopper 1 prior to introducing the charge 2 into the bath 9 so that the charge 2 is preheated and takes up fluorine constituents, e.g. by adsorption, from the gases for return to the furnace. The combustion gases pass by a pipe 3 through a slotted or perforated wall 5 of the hopper 1, and a branch pipe 11 may be provided to lead gases to the hopper 1 via a feed pipe 6 for the alumina. Combustion gases and/or compressed air are led through a pipe 13 which communicates with a central storage bin or with the hopper of the preceding furnace to fluidize and transport the charge to the hopper 1. A dry cyclone separator may be located upstream of the burner to remove dust from the gases.
