Abstract

1437448 Preheating and burning cement ALLIS-CHALMERS CORP 12 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 42790/73 Heading F4B Cement clinker is produced in a rotary kiln 1. Gases, dust and volatilized alkalis leave the kiln as a stream having a temperature of at least 1800‹ F. The stream preheats raw material being fed to the kiln from a hopper 10 through a particle suspension type preheater 5 (which may be a cylindrical tower and/or a plurality of cyclone separators). From a hood 2, a portion of the stream leaving the kiln 1 is by-passed away from the preheater 5 through a separator 30. Water is sprayed into the separator 30 at 32 in sufficient quantity to lower the temperature to below 600‹ F. to obtain rapid freezing of volatilized alkalis to particles smaller than 10- 20 microns. From the separator 30, particles larger than 10-20 microns are returned to the kiln and the by-passed stream passes to a fine dust collector 22 where the alkali particles and dust particles smaller than 10-20 microns are separated. The main stream of gases &c. from the hood 2 passes upwardly through the preheater 5 and a cyclone dust collector 15, being drawn on by a fan 20 to the fine dust collector 22.
