Abstract

In a method of treating granular material with gases or gases with granular materials such as the oxidizing of ores, the burning or sintering of lime, gypsum, minerals, &c., gas addition reactions such as the addition of ammonia to phosphates, nitrogen to calcium carbide, or gas absorption processes such as the removal of carbon dioxide by granular calcium hydroxide, the material is passed downwardly in a deep layer over an inclined surface 3 with openings through which the gas is blown upwardly to flow through the material, the rate of <PICT:0739372/III/1> upward flow of the gas being sufficient to reduce the normal downward pressure of the granular material by at least 20 per cent without being sufficient to suspend the material. The gas enters the chamber 1 by a pipe 9 and leaves by a pipe 10, the material enters through an aperture 2 and is discharged via pipe 7 having its outlet controlled by a flap 8 and the surface 3 may be vibrated. In modifications the chamber has a number of inclined surfaces in series and may be divided into sections each individually supplied with gas so that the material can be treated on its path downwards with different gases. In further modifications heat exchangers are provided within the chamber to supply or dissipate heat. Material may also be dusted by powdered material borne by the gases. Specifications 665,032, [Group XIII], and 697,204 are referred to.
