Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent a body to be treated from being deformed and enhance the surface hardness thereof by a method wherein the upper surface of a fluidized bed comprised of a flowing particulate material is heated by a carbonitriding gas mixture so that the body to be treated being in the fluidized bed is heated to a predetermined temperature. CONSTITUTION:A gas for forming an atmosphere consisting of a mixture of N2, NH3 and CO2 with CH4 or C3H8 is supplied into a pressure chamber 5 of a furnace 1 to fluidize alumina particles on a diffusing plate 6, thereby forming the fluidized bed. On the other hand, a fuel is jetted from nozzles 8a, 8b and is burnt by mixing it with air supplied from nozzles 9a, 9b, whereby the fluidized bed is heated to 600-700 deg.C. As a result, the body to be treated which is embedded in the fluidized bed is heated uniformly to 600-700 deg.C. Accordingly, since the body is carbonitrided in the temperature zone of not higher than Ac1 point, a porduct free from deformation and having a high surface hardness can be obtained.
