Abstract

<PICT:0795654/III/1> <PICT:0795654/III/2> Processes such as calcination, oxidation reduction or drying of finely divided solids are carried out in a chamber 10 divided by a plate 12 having perforations larger than the maximum particle size of the charge material by preserving a substantially static bed 22 of the material by hot gses supplied through a pipe 13 by a blower 14. Charge material is fed continuously or intermittently through a pipe 16 and is spread over the bed by a plough 18. A valve 21 in the pipe 13 is periodically closed to allow the treated material to fall through the plate 12 into the valve-controlled hopper 11 for discharge. In a modification, Fig. 2, two superposed beds 39 and 41 are respectively maintained on a refractory perforated partition 27 and a perforated plate 26. Gaseous or other fuel is supplied to the chamber 25 through pipes 38, and cold air by the fan 32 below the plate 26. Specification 666,172 is referred to.
