996,466. Preheating raw materials; heating and cooling granular materials. PREROVSKE STROJIRNY, NARODNI PODNIK. Nov. 27, 1962 [Nov. 27, 1961], No. 44800/62. Headings F4B and F4U. Apparatus for heating or cooling particulate material fed from a feeder 3 to a pipe 24 comprises three members 14, 20 and 15 through which the material passes in countercurrent to heating or cooling gases, a pipe 6 leading a portion of gas from the bottom to the top chamber and a blower 10 withdrawing gas from the middle chamber and passing it to the upper chamber. As illustrated, material to be preheated and supplied to a rotary furnace 5 falls from the feeder 3 on to a rotating plate 2 and then on to a hollow, substantially conical charge retaining body 4. The base of the latter rests against the walls of the chamber 14 and has scalloped edges to provide charge flow openings. The flow of material from the middle to the lower chamber is controlled by a cylindrical shutter 13 located above a charge distributing body 17. The latter has a bore 23 communicating with the pipe 6 which leads the furnace gases to perforations 12 in the charge retaining cone 4. Outlets 7 in the pipe 6 allow a portion of the gases to be withdrawn by the blower 10 through a cyclone separator 9.
