Abstract

A process for heat treating finely divided solids by up-flow of hot gas, which comprises feeding them, as in the apparatus shown, through conduit 38 to a bed 22 of thermally-stable coarser solids resistant to gas entrainment, controlling the velocity of the gas through the bed so as to maintain the thermally-stable solids as a fluidized bed whilst propelling the fine solids upwardly into a freeboard space 23 for discharge to a separator 40, and maintaining the bed at an elevated temperature, is characterized in that the thermally stable solids are of the same chemical composition as the reacted finely divided solids whereby contamination of the latter is avoided. The heat required in the process may be produced by fuel supplied through conduit 44, or by preheating the fluidizing gas supplied through conduit 29. If necessary, water for cooling may alternatively be supplied through conduit 44. Conduit 25 <PICT:0731923/III/1> serves for the supply of the coarser solids, and conduit 27 for fuel for starting up the process. The level of the bed is controlled by the operation of valves in overflow conduits 32, 34, 36. The process is applicable to the calcination of calcium carbonate sludges, to the roasting of sulphide ores such as pyrite, to the reduction to magnetite of hematite, and to the treatment of red mud from the Bayer process.
