Abstract
<PICT:0930209/III/1> <PICT:0930209/III/2> In conducting reactions between a gas or vapour and a liquid in the tubes of a boiler tube furnace containing catalytic or other solid particles, the gas or vapour and the liquid are introduced uniformly over the cross-section of said tubes and passed upwardly therethrough. As shown in Fig. 1. the reactants are both introduced into the lower chamber 7 of the furnace, gas being admitted to the tubes through nozzles 12 and liquid through pipes 13 (which may contain throttle valves) and the product being removed at 5. In Fig. 2, a supply tank 14 in the upper part of the furnace provides a reservoir for the liquid which is admitted to the reaction tubes through pipes 17. Uniform gas distribution is achieved by the use of nozzles (as shown) or porous filter plates, across which a pressure drop is maintained, preferably such that the pressure of the gas is reduced to at most half that of the liquid.
