Abstract

<PICT:0822111/III/1> <PICT:0822111/III/2> A method for supplying a fluid hydrocarbon charge, at least partially in the liquid phase, to the conversion zone of a hydrocarbon conversion process employing granular solid contact material as a compact moving bed, comprises maintaining a compact mass of contact material 18 (Fig. 1) above the downwardly moving compact reaction bed 21, continuously passing material from the bottom of mass 18 to the top of bed 21 as a plurality of streams 22, supplying fresh hot contact material from a bed 39 to mass 18 by a plurality of streams 40, feeding hydrocarbon charge, at least partially in the liquid phase and at a temperature different from that of the contact material, from a pipe 42 through pipes 44 to pipes 46 into the mass 18 below the surface of the material, so that vapours in the charge and any vapours formed from the liquid port of the charge pass upwardly through mass 18 into a gas space 26 and then pass through a space 20 around the mass 18 into the upper surface of bed 21. Mass 18 is supported by a tray 19, and streams 40 and 22 are confined by pipes. Pipes 44 pass into streams 40 and feed pipes 46 through manifolds 45. Liquid charge not vaporized is retained on the material in mass 18 and passes to bed 21 with the material. In a modification, manifolds 45 and pipes 46 are replaced by manifolds 53 (Fig. 2) each consisting of two conical members divided by upright partitions, and a curved baffle 52. The contact material may be catalytic or non-catalytic.
