Abstract

<PICT:0590597/III/1> The removal of entrained solids with hot gases leaving a reaction chamber containing finely divided catalyst fluidized by hydrocarbon gases or vapours prevented by a dense shower of liquid of such input temperature and velocity that the entire outlet area is screened by the shower, vapours evolved from the liquid being removed with the gases. Apparatus for cracking hydrocarbons comprises a vessel 1 containing a catalytic mass 6 maintained in fluidized condition by incoming feed material introduced preferably in gaseous form through inlets 2 and a screen 3. Vapour products leave by way of a stack 9 at the bottom of which an annular conduit 10 with two concentric series of jets 12 provides a dense liquid shower falling on a baffle 14 at or slightly below the upper surface 7 of the dense phase of the catalyst. Fresh catalyst is continuously introduced through a pipe 5 the used material being withdrawn through a pipe 4. In one modification, liquid from three concentric rings of jets is received in a cylindrical container with funnel-like base extending into the catalyst a horizontal baffle being positioned beneath its dampered outlet. In another two or more vertically spaced jet rings produce a commingled shower which may be scattered by a baffle after reaching the catalyst. The apparatus may be used as the catalyst regenerator or in other processes of gas absorption, distillation and carbonization, etc. Suitable liquids for scrubbing the gases from the cracking process which involves reaction temperatures of 800-1,000 DEG F comprise recycled heavy oil or oil catalyst slurry, lighter oil, or diphenyl; water, which is also suitable for use in the regenerator, may also be employed. Specifications 554,227 and 557,624 are referred to.
