Abstract

<PICT:0766860/III/1> In the cracking of a heavy residual petroleum oil to produce a low molecular weight unsaturated hydro-carbons, such as ethylene, a stream of inert solid particles at 1250-1700 DEG F. from a heater 13 (as shown a fluid bed type burner), together with a fine preheated spray of the oil from a pipe 19, is led to a reaction zone 17 comprising a vertical cylindrical tube lined with refractory material. The converted stream passes through a pipe 21, inclined at 10 degrees-60 degrees with the horizontal, into a cyclone separator 19 (see Group II) to separate the solids from the vapours. The vapours discharged from the separator through a pipe 31 are quenched by liquid, vapour or solids supplied by a line 37. The solids discharge pipe 25 has pipes such as 39, 41 which supply steam to strip entrained vapours upwardly from the solids. Some of the separated solids are returned to the burner by a pipe 43. In a modification a primary vapour product may be withdrawn from the pipe 21 upstream of the separator.
