Abstract

<PICT:0603082/III/1> In a process for the catalytic conversion of hydrocarbons of the kind in which a suspension of hydrocarbons and catalyst is passed through a reactor and the catalyst is separated from the cracked products mainly in cyclone separators followed by separation of residual catalyst by scrubbing the vapours with a condensate oil obtained therefrom, the oil is separated from the catalyst by filtration, by settling, or centrifugally and the separated particles are returned for use in the process, the oil being rejected. In Fig. 1 the regenerator 52 is mounted above the reactor 18, regenerated catalyst being returned through an aerated stand pipe 92 to mix with the feed entering through a pipe 12 having a distributer plate 16. The main portion of the catalyst is separated in a cyclone 24 situated within the reactor. The vapors pass thence to a tower 28 from which vaporous products pass overhead through cooler 110 to gas separator 112 while heating oil and cycle oil fractions are withdrawn through 122 and 124. The bottoms are recycled through cooler 136 as scrubbing medium and part of the oil with entrained catalyst is withdrawn through cooler 140 to a filter 142 where the catalyst particles are separated from the oil and passed to a mixer 148 where it is mixed with a portion of the crude feed and the mixture passed through line 156 to the reactor. The catalyst may also be fed through line 156 to the regenerator 52. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the reactor and regenerator chamber are placed side by p side, and the catalyst and vapours are removed therefrom together and separated in a plurality of cyclone separators; residual catalyst is separated from the scrubbing oil in a Dorr thickener. Specification 547,048 is referred to.
