Abstract
<PICT:0645171/IV (a)/1> Artificial threads are subjected to aqueous liquid treatment while passing over a roller, having its surface divided into at least one liquid treating zone and a boundary zone, the surface of which is not wetted by the liquid used so that the liquid supplied to the treating zone will not normally pass across the surface of the boundary zone. The roller may have two or more treating zones separated by boundary zones, and it may have a drying zone separated from a treating zone. A boundary zone may be situated at one or both ends of the roller to prevent liquid passing to the bearings supporting the roller. The boundary zone may be formed by cutting an annular channel in the surface of the roller and filling it with a material which will not be wetted by the liquids used. Such material may be roughened to facilitate the projection of liquid droplets from its surface. In the case of artificial threads made from viscose, the treatment liquids may comprise washing, desulphurizing, and bleaching liquids and these may be applied to separate zones of the roller. For such treatments, the boundary zones of the roller may be made of solid ethylene polymers, solid tetrafluorethylene polymers, or solid interpolymers of tetrafluorethylene and other substances, e.g. ethylene. The drying zone if present may be internally steam-heated or the roller may be internally steam-heated along its length. The roller may be cylindrical or it may be tapered, frusto-conical, or stepped to allow for stretching or relaxation of the thread passing over the roller. Two rollers may be provided and these may be mutually inclined and arranged with their axes in the same or different planes. As shown, artificial filaments issue from jet 4, and the thread 6 passes to the stepped end 8 of roller 9. It passes several times to and from the ends 8 and 10 of rollers 9 and 11, and then passes round the main part of rollers 9, 11, being advanced in helical turns to the other end of the rollers. The thread is treated with liquids from pipes 21-24, and used liquids are collected in troughs 25-28. The roller 11 is provided with bands 18-20 of material which is not wetted by the treating liquids. The thread passes to drying device 29 where it is passed several times round a steam-heated roller 30. The thread then passes to a winding device 33. In an example, a thread regenerated from viscose is drawn from the bath by a godet and stretched between the godet and a pair of inclined rollers along which it is advanced in helical turns and on which it is treated with liquids in zones separated by bands of polythene. The final zone, which is a drying zone, is provided by a steam-heated metallic portion of one or both of the rollers. Specification 423,152 is referred to.
