Abstract

538,813. Treating artificial yarns and threads. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. March 16, 1940, No. 4914. Convention date, April 22, 1939. [Class 2 (ii)] The elongation of stretched yarn or thread made from vinyl resins is set or increased by passing the fibres under tension through a heated zone, so that the yarn is raised to a temperature below its softening point for a sufficient time to set the stretch so that there is no appreciable contraction when the tension is released. Apparatus is shown by which the yarn is set continuously as it is passed from one bobbin to another, and it is at the same time flexed to give it a soft feel. The stretched, but otherwise untreated yarn 10 may be supplied direct from the stretching apparatus, or, as shown, from a wound bobbin 11 frictionally driven by a roller 12 so that the yarn is fed forward at a constant rate. It passes round a roller 13 and round flexing rollers 14 of small diameter making a suitable number of laps, and is then wound upon a bobbin 15 with a traversing mechanism 17. The bobbin 15 is frictionally driven by the roller 16 which runs at the same peripheral speed as the rollers 12, 13. The roller 13 is partly submerged in a liquid, such as water, in a tank 18 maintained at the desired setting temperature. The Specification includes description showing the effect upon a vinyl resin yarn spun from a conjoint polymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate of different periods of exposure to the setting bath. The differing periods are obtained by varying the number of laps round the rollers 13, 14. Specifications 518,555 and 518,710 are referred to.
