Abstract
<PICT:0718852/IV (a)/1> In a machine for the continuous spinning of textile fibres requiring wet-processing treatments, particularly viscose rayon, and comprising two rollers 10, 11 arranged with their axes slightly skew and tilted with respect to the horizontal, so that thread led on to the rollers at their lower end progresses upon rotation of at least one of the rollers in a helical path around the rollers to their upper end, one of the rollers 10 is divided along its length into a number of treatment zones separated by flanges 12 so that processing liquids fed to each zone and collected in respective troughs arranged beneath each zone are not contaminated by liquid fed to other zones. The processing liquids are applied to the roller 10 through the pipes 16 which are so arranged with respect to the rollers that the left-hand surfaces of the flanges 12 are not wetted. A further drying zone 27 is provided on the roller 10. This is heated by liquid passing within the roller and is thermally insulated from the remainder of the roller by the zig-zag gap 18. If desired, Fig. 7 (not shown), a further conditioning zone wherein the thread is moistened to a desired degree may be provided. These two further zones may be partially enclosed. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), each flange 12 is replaced by a double flange which projects to extend both sides of the corresponding upstanding wall of the trough 14; thus in this arrangement both surfaces of the flange may be wetted. Flanges corresponding to the flanges 12 may be arranged around the roller 11. Means, Fig. 6 (not shown), may be employed for wiping liquid from the surface of the roller 11 and restoring it by means of a duct to its appropriate zone of the roller 10. The roller 10 may have a conical shape or be stepped so as to effect a desired degree of stretch or contraction of the thread as it progresses along the roller.
