Abstract

<PICT:0691204/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0691204/IV (a)/2> Artificial threads are passed, continuously with their production and while arranged in the form of a sheet, through a series of treatment baths in a substantially horizontal direction and at or near the surface of the liquid, wave motions of the liquid surface being eliminated by the presence in the treatment troughs of a filling material which is of such a form or shape that liquid may flow easily through the material or between the component portions of the material. The filling material is placed below the guided sheet of threads. The filling material may consist of glass, porcelain or lead balls, beads, rings or rods; sieves with wide meshes; wound thread; or broken quartzite. The treating troughs may be provided with supporting and guiding rods for the sheet of threads. The troughs may be tilted to facilitate flow of the treating liquids. The process may be used in the production of threads from viscose, and the treatment baths may include washing, desulphuring and bleaching liquids. The treatment liquids may flow in the same direction as or in the opposite direction to the threads. Stretching of the threads may be effected while they are passing through the first two treating troughs, where regeneration to cellulose is completed. Hot water or dilute acid may be used for completing the regeneration to cellulose. As shown in Fig. 1, the threads, after leaving the coagulating bath, are arranged in the form of a sheet 1 which is advanced through a series of treatment troughs. The advancing devices comprise sets of rollers 12, 13, 14. Roller 15 presses on roller 12 to squeeze the sheet of threads. Funnels 16, 17, 18, 19 receive liquids which are pressed out of the threads. The sheet of threads passes in a substantially horizontal direction through the whole series of treatment troughs. Guide rods 29-40 are provided so that the sheet of threads travels substantially on the surface of the liquids in the troughs. The threads may be stretched in trough 6. If desired, the tension may be reduced in later troughs of the series. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of one of the troughs. The filling material 53 is present underneath the sheet of threads 1, which is guided by rod 32 so as to travel at the surface of the liquid. Supporting rods 54 prevent sagging.
