Abstract
<PICT:0453682/IV/1> In a process for treating schappe bands of viscose artificial silk in washing, sulphur-removing, bleaching, reviving, dyeing or similar baths, the band during its progress through the baths in a horizontal plane has imparted thereto a tensioning and relaxing movement within the liquid whereby the fibres are opened out to the treating liquid. The band 5 is conveyed into each bath 2 by a pair of feed rollers 3 which also express surplus treating liquid therefrom. It is guided through the bath by rollers 4. The device for imparting the additional movement to the band may be a bar 6 arranged under the band and swingable about an axis parallel to itself and above the band. The upper surface of the bar 6 is higher in the bath than the lower surfaces of rollers 4. The band carries the bar 6 along with it during part of its movement until the recovery forces overcome the frictional forces when the bar 6 swings back again. In a modification, the bar may be vertically reciprocated by means external to the bath, or the pairs of rollers at each end of the bath may be rotated at periodically alternating speeds which are out of phase so that the band undergoes a periodic slackening and tautening.
