Abstract

<PICT:0599296/IV/1> A web of fabric is dyed, bleached or otherwise treated with liquid by drawing it downwardly and upwardly through a series of passageways surrounding the web and causing a stream of the treating liquid to flow continuously lengthwise in the same direction as the fabric through the said passageways. The rate of flow of liquid and the speed of the fabric are such that the treating liquid will have a depth at the points of highest elevation of the fabric just sufficient to cover the moving fabric. Apparatus described consists of a tank 4 containing water, heating coils 5 and inner walls 6 shaped to form vertical partitions or dams 7, 8 and 9. The partition 9 is slightly lower than the top of the roll 20, and the following partitions 10, 11 and 12 are slightly lower than the corresponding partitions 7, 8 and 9, respectively. A baffle 21 with lower roll 25 is inserted in each of the wells formed by the partitions 7, 8, 9, . . . so as to leave a narrow passageway for the web and surrounding liquid which enter the apparatus through funnel 15. Elevated rolls 27 and 28 are driven and serve to lessen the tension on the fabric. The baffles 21 with rolls 25 are raised out of the wells in order to facilitate festooning of the fabric when starting up the apparatus. The apparatus may be used for dyeing fabrics with two or more dyestuffs which have different affinities for the material, with vat dyes, substantive dyes, sulphur dyes, diazo and naphtol dyes.
