Abstract

<PICT:0429592/IV/1> In a method of treating web or sheet material with liquid, the material is passed between one or more pairs of submerged jets, directed normally or at an inclination thereto, which intersect substantially at the material. For the treatment of web material, the apparatus comprises a tank, through which the material is guided over rollers 23, 20, 22, and a pair of nozzles 24, 25, preferably formed integrally with a common header, and having slit-like openings which may extend completely across the material. The liquid in the tank is circulated to the nozzles through conduits of large section by means of a pump disposed outside the tank, and the jets of liquid emerging from the nozzles may be constricted to flow closely to the material, and in a direction opposite to the motion of the material, by baffles 27, 28. Several such tanks may be arranged in series, and the apparatus may be used for washing, dyeing, mercerizing, or carbonizing operations; or may be adapted for the cleaning of scale from steel sheets and the like.
