Passing liquids through travelling materials; passing loose fibrous materials through fluid-applying apparatus.-In a machine for washing or otherwise treating by a wet process textile fibres and threads 9, suitable for artificial silk and wool in their tuft state, a movable grid with longitudinal bars 4, carried by transverse bars 5, intermeshes with a fixed grid with longitudinal bars 1, the movable grid being directly carried by cam &c. means 6, which may be driven by a pulley 8, which imparts a combined to-andfro and up-and-down motion to it to feed the material through the machine for treatment by sprays 10. As modifications, both grids may be movable, being directly carried by cam &c. means and the longitudinal bars may be formed on their upper surface, with saw teeth. The grids may also be hollow, the treating fluid being forced under pressure through them and escaping by means of perforations in the upper surfaces of the bars.
