Passing materials through fluids; zigzag-roller type; washing materials with surface treatment.-Apparatus for washing, dyeing, impregnating, scouring, or otherwise treating yarns or fabrics in open-width or rope form comprises a number of vats 1 each provided with two series of fabricguiding rollers 34, 35 mounted on reciprocating bars 12, 12<1>, which cause the liquid to engage the fabric flatways while it is in a substantially vertical position and is being fed through the vat. The bars are mounted on guide-rollers 11 and are reciprocated by connecting-rods. The fabric is fed through the vat by driven rollers 7, 36, 37, a weight-pressed roller 43 pressing the fabric against the roller 37 to express the treating- liquid therefrom before the fabric passes to a second vat. Tension is maintained on the fabric by gravity-actuated rollers 38 - - 41, and variation of the tension due to the reciprocation of the bars 12, 12<1> is overcome by pairs of rollers 52, 53, which are mounted on chain-geared rotating bars 54 and are adapted to engage the fabric periodically. When the apparatus is used for scouring, a reciprocating, rotating, or other brush is placed above one of the feed-rollers, for example, the roller 36.
