Abstract

192,315. Boby, Ltd., R., and Griffiths, C. H. March 18, 1922. Breaking and scutching apparatus.-A machine for breaking, softening, and scutching flax, hemp, or ramie, and of the kind in which the material is first fed between a grid and breaking rollers on a rotary main cylinder and is afterwards withdrawn by reversing the mechanism, is provided with rotary plain or comb bars 28, 29, 30, which are driven by gearing from the main cylinder 2 and pass in succession across the grid 7 to draw the fibres therefrom immediately a breaking-roller 4 has left the grid. Cross-shaped combs 6 precede the rollers 4 and revolve with the cylinder, the fibres being thus combed or scraped on opposite sides. The grid is substantially vertical. In a modification, the bars 28, 29, 30 are spring-supported, and are caused to follow the contour of the grid by a cam-guide at each side of the machine.
