Abstract

<PICT:0394216/IV/1> <PICT:0394216/IV/2> Freshly spun filaments obtained from solutions of cellulose or of cellulose esters or ethers are passed from the extrusion apparatus to one or more pairs of rollers around which they are guided in a helical path and upon which they are treated with washing, bleaching, dyeing, sizing, or other liquids. The rollers are disposed with their axes inclined to each other either in a common plane or in parallel planes. The arrangement of the rollers ensures separation of the individual turns of thread. When the axes are inclined in a common plane, the thread loops travel towards the geometrical point of intersection independently of the direction of rotation of the rollers. When the axes are arranged skew fashion the direction of advance of the thread loops depends on the direction of rotation of the rollers. As shown in Fig. 3, the thread loops travel in the direction of the arrow c when the rollers are rotating in the direction indicated by the arrows a. In this arrangement, advance of the loops is stated to take place while the thread is in contact with the roller surface, the thread being rolled or twisted temporarily. As shown in Fig. 4, filaments 1 pass from the spinning cell 19, through a channel 4 supplied with acid, and then round the rollers 2, 3, which are inclined from the horizontal and disposed at an angle to each other in a common plane. They are supported in bearings at one end only. Alternatively, the rollers may be arranged in a horizontal plane or the rollers for a series of spinning machines may be arranged in two horizontal rows. The rollers may be driven in groups or together from one drive. When the thread is first taken round the pair of rollers, the separate loops may be in contact but as the rollers rotate, the loops spread out. If desired, a number of threads may be passed round the same pair of rollers. As shown in Fig. 4, liquid is sprayed from pipe 31 on to the surface of the roller 3, but if desired one or both of the rollers may be arranged to dip into a bath of treating liquid. From the rollers 2, 3 the thread passes to the other side of the machine frame and is passed several times round a drying roller 33 and finally wound on spools 35. If desired the threads may be twisted before being wound. Specification 394,217 is referred to.
