Abstract

<PICT:0701313/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0701313/IV (a)/2> Apparatus for the after-treatment of freshly-spun artificial filaments in continuous operation comprises a plurality of tubular after-treatment conduits and means for maintaining a flow of after-treatment liquid through the conduits, the arrangement being such as to cause the filaments to be passed through the conduits p by the action of the flow of after-treatment liquid without the use of mechanically driven forwarding rollers and the conduits being provided with enlargements adapted to cause the filament bundle to open and close repeatedly along the conduit thereby reducing the time required for the treatment. As shown (Fig. 1), filaments spun at 1 are passed successively through liquid after treating zones I-IV. In each zone the filaments are passed from a basin 4 along with treating liquid through a helically coiled pipe 5 provided with enlargements (not shown) into another basin 9. A jet pump 6 serves to draw the liquid and also the filaments through the pipe. Liquid is fed to the jet pump from a sump 10 and circulation of the liquid from basin 9 to basin 4 is effected through sump 10 and a pump 12. Drying of the filaments is similarly effected by passing them with drying air through a pipe 18. An injector 17, fan 20 and heater 21 are provided to circulate and heat the air. Instead of air, drying may similarly be effected by a dehydrating liquid or a non-hygroscopic heated liquid. The jet pump of each zone may be positioned at the other end of pipe 5, and the pipe 5 may be straight instead of coiled. Instead of a jet pump 6 a vacuum or suction chamber may be employed. In a modification (Fig. 9) liquid is cycled by an ejector 6a from and back into each tank 4a through a pipe 5a provided with enlargements (not shown), and with a branch port 5c through which the filaments, carried along with the liquid, are withdrawn for treatment in the next zone. The outlet 5d of each pipe is provided with a throttling member 28 for the purpose of initially threading the filaments through the entire system.
