Abstract

In a fluid treatment of filamentary material, liquid or gas is passed through a pipe 6, Fig. 1, into a housing 4 to be applied to filamentary material F which is passed in a helical path around a reel 3 and is thrown out by centrifugal action from the latter to be deflected by the inner surface 7 of the housing 4 back to the advancing thread. The treating fluid is collected eventually in channels 8 at each end of the housing 4 and may be recirculated through pipes 10 via a pump to the pipe 6. To counteract the tendency of the fluid to advance in the direction of the thread, the inner surface of the housing 24, Fig. 4, is provided with a helical groove 27 which tends to move the fluid from right to left, whilst the thread moves from <PICT:0594129/IV/1> <PICT:0594129/IV/2> left to right. The inner surface of the housing may have a diamond pattern knurling, or it may be of frusto-conical shape with its widest part at the end of the housing at which the thread enters. Alternatively, the deflecting surface is cylindrical, but with its axis inclined with respect to the horizontal reel and downwardly towards the end at which the thread enters the housing. In modified apparatus, the reel and housing may be mounted vertically, and/or the housing may comprise a number of inlet and collecting grooves by means of which a plurality of treating fluids may be applied to the thread at different zones of the reel. In the case of treatment with a gaseous fluid, the latter may be introduced through perforations in the axle of a reel to pass through the helical windings of the thread to be deflected by the inner surface of the housing Specification 594,130 is referred to.
