Abstract
<PICT:0594130/IV/1> <PICT:0594130/IV/2> <PICT:0594130/IV/3> Filamentary material is treated with liquid during passage in a generally helical path within a channel having an external bounding surface extending arcuately about and in close proximity to a substantial portion of the helix, by continuously introducing the liquid to flood the space about the helix within the bounding surface. A reel 3, Fig. 1, around which filamentary material F is passed in a helical path, comprises an internal cylindrical membrane 3b. Treating liquid is applied through a pipe 6 to flood the space between the membrane 3b and a surrounding housing 5. The inner surface of the latter may be helically grooved, knurled, or otherwise shaped in a manner similar to the housings described in Specification 594,129 so that the liquid flows in a direction opposite to the general movement of the thread F. In a modification for the treatment of the thread with different liquids in different zones of the reel, the zones are separated by radial jets of air. Air is forced through an internal bore of the axial shaft 82, Fig. 10, of a reel to emerge through diverging passages 88 between radial members 86, Fig. 11, and narrowed portions 92 of bars 85 which form the surface of the reel. The radial air streams are opposite openings 98 in the deflecting housing 97 and facilitate the removal of the treating liquids therethrough.
