Abstract
<PICT:0880990/III/1> <PICT:0880990/III/2> Apparatus for the continuous concentration or evaporation of a liquid or for heat-exchange between a liquid and a heating medium comprises a stationary casing enclosing a conical rotor within which are fitted a number of coaxial conical partitions to form a number of conical channels, the arrangement being such that alternate channels are traversed by the liquid to be treated and the remainder by the heating medium. The inlets to the channels traversed by the liquid to be treated extend around the axis of the rotor and are associated with a stationary member mounted in the rotor to distribute the liquid into the appropriate channels. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a stationary casing 2 enclosing a conical rotor 5, 6 which contains a number of conical partitions 7 and is rotated on a hollow shaft 12 by means of a pulley 16. The partitions 7 are joined by rings 8, 9 arranged alternately at top and bottom so that alternate channels 10 between the partitions are open at the top and the other channels are open at the bottom. The liquid to be treated is supplied through an inlet 34 and is distributed by pipes 35 to alternate channels 10, whence it passes through channels in the rings 9 into a collecting trough 21, from which it is withdrawn by an outlet pipe 23. The heating medium, e.g. steam, enters at 29 and passes through holes 26 in the rotor into the alternate channels not traversed by the liquid to be treated and thence to the outlet 33, which may be connected to an evacuation device. Condensate is withdrawn through the outlet 30. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the liquid to be treated is supplied through a pipe 70 and is distributed by pipes 71 to alternate channels 42, whence it passes through channels 50 in the rings 40 to a collecting trough 49 and is withdrawn by pipe 67. Steam is supplied at 62 and passes via channel 61 in the shaft 56 to a chamber 55 and thence through openings 65 into the alternate channels 43, leaving the apparatus through pipe 69, which may be connected to an evacuation device. Condensate is withdrawn by pipe 63 through a central channel 64 in the shaft 56.
