In a heat-exchanger for heating, cooling or drying fluids and comminuted substances by means of a gas, a structure, reversibly rotatable in a stationary cylindrical casing 7 has tubes 1 for the gas extending between annular tube plates 2 closing a cylindrical shell 3 to form around the tubes a chamber for the treated fluid or substance which passes through axial openings 4 forming an inlet and an outlet. The treating gas enters the stationary casing 7 at 9 and passes through the tubes 1 and round the shell 3 to an outlet 10. The openings 4 of the rotatable structure are supported on rollers 11 and rotated by sprocket and chain 12, and in the gas heat exchanger shown in Fig. 1 these openings are the ends of a tube 4a passing through the plates 1. The tube 4a has slits 5 through which a gas to be treated is directed by cones 6. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 is for cooling comminuted substances or drying them by means of combustion gases and the substances are fed through a fixed spout 15 directly to the space surrounding the.gas tubes 1 and are passed through by an impeller 16 which may be located at the inlet end. To assist drying, air may be passed over the substance in the apparatus.
