598,531 . Centrifugal machines. PIAZZA, J. May 10, 1943, No. 7397. [Class 23] A centrifugal apparatus for treating liquids with a gas or vapour, comprises a rotor carrying a number of projecting plates 12, Fig, 1, corrugations or tubes, and a stator carrying similar projecting parts 6, to provide a sinuous passage for liquid supplied through passages in the stator. Steam or other vapour enters at 3 and leaves through a pipe 10. A disc 11 may be hollow or filled with heat-insulating material. Hot or cold fluid circulates through the chambers 8. The Specification refers to fermented must being fed into the casing, the must being centrifuged outwards as a film and treated by the steam entering at 3. The treated must is drawn off through a port 2 which may be V-shaped to prevent escape of steam. The steam becomes charged with alcohol vapour. In a second arrangement, the sinuous passages are formed between corrugations on the rotor and stator. This may be used for scrubbing a gas which enters at 3, by a liquid being centrifuged. In a third arrangement, the sinuous passages are formed by annular tubes secured to the relatively-moving surfaces. Fig. 4 shows a further construction, the rotor having zig-zag plates 15 in between similar stator plates 13. Centrifuged material is collected in a ring 18 and discharged through an outlet 19. Pipes 9 lead a heated, or cooled, liquid into chambers 8. This is discharged through pipes 20 and gases or vapours through a pipe 10. Material to be centrifuged enters through pipes 21. A thermometer 22 is provided.
