Abstract

An evaporator comprises a shell 1 enclosing a central conduit 7 and pipes 8, liquid to be vaporized being passed down the central tube from an inlet 11 into a chamber 6 and up the pipes 8, in which latter heat is absorbed countercurrently from a heating medium which enters the evaporator at inlet 16 and leaves at outlet 17, baffles 18 causing the medium to zig-zag through the space around the pipes. A tube 19 is arranged concentrically around, and with slight clearance from the central conduit 7, the tube covering part or, as shown, all of the conduit, the tube p preventing any appreciable heat exchange between liquid in the central conduit and the surrounding medium. The space between the conduit 7 and the tube 19 is sealed at one end, there being a slight clearance from a floating head 4 at the other end. The vapour formed and unvaporized liquid are collected in and discharged from a chamber 12.
