Abstract

714,926. Tubular heat - exchangers. SWINNEY BROS., Ltd. May 8, 1952 [May 10, 1951], No. 11031/51. Class 64(3) A heat-exchanger comprises a chamber 1 housing parallel tubes 8 extending between headers 6, 7, one of which closes the end of the chamber and the other of which is supported within the chamber, the external fluid being admitted to the chamber 1 between the headers (e.g. at 14) and being discharged from the chamber through an outlet 5 passing through the header 6, a baffle plate 15 being arranged within the chamber and being set or capable of being set such that the external fluid must flow across the ends of the tubes on its way to the outlet 5. In the form shown the baffle 15 is adjustable along the tubes by means of a screw 16. Heating fluid (e.g. steam) flows through the tubes from the header 6 to the header 7, and the fluid to be heated (e.g. fuel oil) flows over the tubes. It is stated that the apparatus may alternatively be used as a feed water heater, evaporator or condenser. The chamber 1 is heat insulated by a layer 19 of asbestos felt which is covered by an external clead- . ing of steel. Specification 664,304 is referred to.
