Abstract

Class 64(3) A heat exchanger comprises a pluralty of externally finned tubes each formed as a multi-coil flat spiral in which the spirals are double wound (see Fig. 2) so that the tube ends may be connected to steam inlet and condensate outlet manifolds 15, 17 disposed adjacent the wall of a casing 1 containing the tube assembly, the spiral tubes being spaced apart e.g. by baffles 13, and a fluid such as oil to .be heated flowing over the tubes in a direction at right angles to the spirals. The tube fins preferably extend at right angles to the tube axes so as to lie parallel to the vertical axis of the casing. Steam is passed through the tubes to heat the oil. An additional spiral, located near the lower end of the casing and connected to the manifold 17, may provide an extended outflow path for the steam condensate. Oil enters the casing 1 through an inlet 19 and the discharge temperature of the oil may be controlled by a thermostat in the oil outlet pipe 21. The thermostat may regulate the admission of steam to, or the discharge of condensate from the tube assembly. The apparatus may be cleaned by opening a drain outlet 23 and admitting steam to the casing through a pipe 25.
