Classes 64(3), 123(2) and 123(3) In a tubular heat exchanger an annular tube unit 2 comprising a bundle of tubes 3 is supported in a casing 1 by a member 5 extending axially through the annulus and having radially extending walls 4 disposed at an angle with respect to the tubes and dividing the space between the tubes and the support member 5 into a plurality of separate flow channels. The angular relationship between the walls 4 and the tubes 3 may be effected by using helical tubes in conjunction with straight walls 4 or (as shown) by employing tubes straight for most of their length in conjunction with helical walls 4. In the apparatus shown cooling gas from a nuclear reactor flows axially through the casing 1 and over the tubes 3 through which water passes in a counterflow direction to that of the gas. The water enters the heat exchanger through an inlet 8 and flows through the hollow support member 5 to a header 6. From the header 6 the water flows through the tube to an outlet 9. A plurality of the tube units 2 may be interconnected in one or more casings to constitute sections for the preheating, boiling and superheating of water. The apparatus may also be used for heat exchange between gases or liquids and a further application mentioned is the cooling and removal of moisture particles from steam.
