Abstract

1320788 Tubular heat exchangers NORSK HYDRO AS 1 July 1970 [4 July 1969] 31975/70 Heading F4S An apparatus for heating or cooling a gas comprises a casing 2 in which is disposed a tube bank 10 encircled by an open-ended tubular baffle 16 spaced from the casing and providing a gas flow path between the casing and the baffle, the casing having a fluid connection 4 positioned midway between the ends of the baffle and communicating directly with the space within the baffle, and a further fluid connection 6 communicating with the flow path outside the baffle. The tubes may be U-tubes as shown, connected to a header at one end of the casing, or they may be straight tubes extending between headers one at each end of the casing. Transverse baffles provide a tortuous gas flow path over the tubes. As shown, a gas to be cooled (e.g. by feed water flowing in the tubes) enters the casing at 4 and flows directly to the space within the baffle where it divides into two streams B flowing in opposite directions over the tubes to the open ends of the baffle and thence as shown by arrows C, D through the path between the casing and the baffle whence the two streams merge to discharge through connection 6. When a gas is being heated (e.g. by steam flowing in the tubes) this flow pattern is reversed so that the heated gas discharges through connection 4. Two or more of the heat exchangers may be connected together in series (Fig. 2).
