Abstract
1412842 Tubular heat exchangers W W HAGNAUER 26 March 1973 14386/73 Heading F4S A heat exchanger comprises two tube units 11, 12 each having at least one tube sheet, said units being interconnected by a fluid transfer chamber 35 defined in part by a tube sheet of each said unit (e.g. the tube sheets 17, 18), tie means 70 extending across the chamber and being secured (e.g. welded) to the tube sheets. The tie means may comprise a solid or tubular bar of triangular, cylindrical or oval crosssection and it may be encased in a sheath of thermally insulating material. The bore of a tubular tie bar may serve to interconnect the two heat exchangers to equalize pressures therein externally of the tubes (Fig. 6). The apparatus shown may be used for heating feedwater by means of stream. The heat exchanger units comprise U-tubes in respective casings 20, 21 each having an inlet (30, 31) and an outlet (33, 34) for the fluid flowing over the tubes. Partitions 43, 36 subdivide portions of the chamber 35 as inlet and outlet chambers 48, 40 respectively, for the tube-side fluid which flows through the tube units in series via the chamber 35. 71 is a door-covered access manhole. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4) the tie means comprises a portion wall (76) in the transfer chamber.
