Abstract

1411472 Tubular heat exchangers; steam generators CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 20 Dec 1973 [6 Jan 1973] 905/73 Headings F4S and F4A In a heat exchanger, e.g. a waste heat steam generator, comprising a horizontally disposed shell 10 containing a plurality of U-tubes 32 extending from a tube plate 30 and surrounded by a cylindrical shroud 44, the shell-side fluid, e.g. hot waste gases, entering at one end through an inlet 16 is constrained to flow over the tubes in a tortuous manner, by means of transverse baffles 40, before entering the space between the shroud and the shell via an opening 52 in the shroud adjacent the tube plate 30; the fluid leaves this space, which is closed at one end by an annular wall 50, through an outlet 17. The cylindrical shroud 44, which is formed from a number of telescoping parts, is supported by skid bar assemblies (45, Fig. 2 not shown), permitting longitudinal expansion and facilitating withdrawal of the tubes 32. The shell includes a refractory lining 48 and the baffles 40 are interconnected by tie bars 42. Fluid to be heated, e.g. preheated feedwater, enters the lower horizontal tube passes 34 via inlet chamber 20, and heated fluid, e.g. steam, leaves the upper horizontal tube passes 38 through outlet chamber 24. The tube plate 30 and the parts of the U- tubes adjacent thereto are made of carbon steel, whereas the remaining parts of the U-tubes are made of 1% chromium-¢% molybdenum steel. The shell is provided with drains 64 and a syphon drain 66.
