Abstract
1447051 Tubular heat exchangers; boilers UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 28 March 1974 [16 April 1973] 18312/73 Heading F4S and F4A A shell and tube heat exchanger, for use in a nuclear reactor for heat exchange between primary and secondary sodium, comprises a plurality of tubes 1 the ends la of which extend between cylindrical tube sheets 4 incorporated in a central tube member 3. Within the tube member 3 is disposed a removable tubular baffle 5 which seals against the wall of the tube 3 between the tube sheets 4 to define two coaxial flow ducts 6 and 7. The baffle 5 is double walled to define an argon filled interspace, the inner wall being formed with an expansible region 5a to accommodate differential expansion of the walls. In an alternative construction (not shown) the tubes 1 are of helical form. The heat exchanger, which is enclosed within a housing 10, is arranged to depend from the roof (9, Fig. 1) of a nuclear reactor. Primary sodium enters a distribution plenum 14 via an inlet port 11 in the housing and after passing downwardly over the tubes 1 leaves via an outlet 13. The flow of primary sodium into the plenum 14 can be controlled by movement of a vertically slidable sleeve 19. The plenum 14 is bounded by perforate baffles 15, 16 and 18. A cylindrical baffle 8 prevents direct impingement of the primary sodium on to the tube 3 and tube sheets 4. Secondary sodium entering through an inlet port (21, Fig. 1, not shown) flows downwardly through duct 6 and then upwardly through the tubes 1 and outer duct 7 to finally leave through an outlet port (22). Removal of baffle 5 permits inspection and, if necessary, plugging of defective tubes. Heat exchange coils 20 are provided to remove residual heat from the shell when the reactor has become inoperative. A drain tube 23 extends from the bottom end of tube 3 to a drain facility situated between two spaced annular seals (24, 25) which close the upper end of duct 7.
