1291847 Tubular heat exchangers R L NEWBY (Badische Anilin and Soda Fabrik AG) 22 Dec 1969 62281/69 Heading F4S 'In a heat exchanger in which gas; from a chamber G flows through tubes 3 and is cooled in a chamber E by a fluid flowing over the tubes, the gas-entry ends of the tubes 3 are which supported by a tube plate 1, are double walled to provide a jacket space C around each tube for a coolant. A baffle 4 in each jacket provides a return path for the coolant. Guide vanes (6, Fig. 3) in each jacket may generate a vortex type of flow in the coolant. The chamber E may for example comprise a waste heat boiler in which the fluid flowing over the tubes (i.e. the cooling fluid) is evaporated. In Fig. 1, the cooling fluid intended for chamber E, enters the apparatus via a chamber D (formed between tube plates 1 and 5) and flows thence through jackets C and finally into chamber E. In an alternative form, Fig. 4, the jacket spaces C comprise closed chambers through which a separate cooling fluid is conveyed via pipes 8 and 9. Excessive heating of the tube plate 1 by the gas is prevented by allowing the gas entry ends of the tubes to project beyond the tube plate into the gas generating chamber G, and providing on the tube plate or heat insulating layer 7 of brick or of rammed-in composition held in place by anchoring elements, e.g. studs (not shown) on the projecting tube portions.
